How to choose a bedside lamp

A lit Cloud Contour glow lamp beside a closed book on a wooden bedside table

A bedside lamp has one job at night: enough light to read by without lighting up the whole room. So choosing one is mostly practical: how much room is on the table, how high the light sits, and how soft it feels.

Measure the table first, and leave room for what lives there: a phone, a glass of water, a book. Then think about height. If you read in bed, the light should sit around shoulder height when you're sitting up, so a taller lamp suits a low table and a shorter one a high table. The lamps below run from the smallest to the largest. Every price is the live price on our store, and anything that sells out drops off this page automatically.

  • A slim ribbed lamp about 10 cm across and 20 cm tall, for the narrowest bedside table.

  • A drop-shaped shade cradled by a crescent-moon frame, about 17 cm tall. The shade glows softly; the frame stays solid.

  • The softly rippled lamp in the photo above, about 16 cm across and 20.5 cm tall.

  • A ribbed lantern shape about 15 cm across and 22 cm tall.

  • About 17 cm across and 24 cm tall: a middle size that suits most bedside tables.

  • A sitting cat under a pleated shade, about 25 cm tall. Made for a child's room or a cat lover's bedside.

  • A tall pleated shade, open at the top, about 29 cm overall. In Frost the glow is soft and diffused; in the other finishes light washes the wall above.

  • The largest here, about 24 cm wide and 30 cm tall, with a wavy shade. Best on a wide bedside table or a dresser.
