New Year, new desk

Crest device stand holding a closed laptop, a Ridge catchall tray, a Kite planter and a lit Quiet Reed glow lamp on a cleared wooden desk

The first week of January is the easiest time to reset a desk: the holidays have cleared it, and the year hasn't filled it up yet. This guide is a short plan for keeping it that way, one piece at a time.

Give each thing a home. The laptop stands upright when you stop work, the headphones and phone get a stand, the pens go in one organiser, and the keys, earbuds and watch go in a tray. Then add a lamp for the evenings and one small plant. Every price below is the live price on our store, and anything that sells out drops off this page automatically.

  • Holds a closed laptop upright on its edge in a slot about 2 cm wide, so the desk is clear the moment work stops.

  • Two slots, 15 mm and 17 mm wide, for a slim laptop and a tablet or phone side by side. Check your device's thickness first.

  • A curved stand with a gently dished saddle that keeps over-ear headphones off the desk.

  • A sculptural phone stand that keeps the screen up and in view, so the phone stops wandering round the desk.

  • Three compartments, one large and two smaller, each about 9.7 cm deep, for pens, scissors and a ruler.

  • A wavy organiser about 19 cm wide for pens, stationery and the cables that end up loose.

  • Two upright pen channels and a front pocket for sticky notes or a phone.

  • A rounded-oval tray about 19 × 11 cm with a ribbed wall: one place for keys, earbuds and a watch at the end of the day.

  • A ribbed table lamp about 20 cm tall that gives the desk a warm, soft light for evening work.

  • A small table lamp, about 24 cm tall, for a desk that's also a bedside table.

  • A small planter about 6.6 cm across, with a 5.4 cm opening for one succulent.

  • Six key hooks under a shelf about 9 cm deep, for the door you leave by each morning. Wall screws not included.
